One Mile: Ryan Phillippe to battle a cult in horror film shot back-to-back with sequel

Ryan Phillippe (I Know What You Did Last Summer) has signed on to star in the horror film One Mile for Kapital Entertainment – and will be sticking around for the sequel, which has already been given a greenlight and will be shot back-to-back with the first film! Kapital’s Aaron Kaplan, Brian Morewitz, and Michael Lohmann are producing the double feature alongside Kaplan’s daughter Jaiden Kaplan, who initially came up with the idea for these films.

Jaiden Kaplan is now a junior at Duke, and Deadline reports that she “came up with the idea for One Mile while she and her dad were on a college tour in the Northeast in 2019 and were driving on a particularly desolate highway surrounded by woods on one side and half-frozen lakes on the other.”

One Mile has the following synopsis: After his release from prison, a father (Phillippe) tries to reconnect with his daughter by taking her on a college tour, but they find themselves battling for more than their relationship when a murderous cult, living in the woods, pursues them.

Both One Mile and its sequel are being written and executive produced by John Hlavin, who previously worked with Phillippe on the USA Network TV series Shooter. Hlavin developed and executive produced that show, which Phillippe starred in and executive produced. Phillippe also previously worked with Kapital Entertainment on the ABC TV series Secrets and Lies. Hlavin is currently showrunner on the Showtime series The Man Who Fell to Earth.

One Mile and its sequel are going to be released by Paramount Global Content Distribution – and the goal is for these films to be theatrical releases. The Deadline report didn’t mention who might be directing them.

The idea of a father and daughter battling a murderous, wood-dwelling cult sounds like a solid horror movie set-up to me, and One Mile has caught my attention even more with the fact that it already has a sequel lined up. I look forward to seeing how these movies are going to turn out.
