Otherworldly trailer for The Green Knight with Dev Patel creeps online

It's funny how certain quirky films from your childhood stand out. Films that for most would be forgettable but are indelible burned into your brain. Personally, movies like KRULL and ICE PIRATES spring to mind. Another one that would probably be right at home on JoBlo's "Awfully Good" segment was 1984's SWORD OF THE VALIANT. A remake of the 1973 film GAWAIN AND THE GREEN KNIGHT, the film starred Miles O'Keefe and his awful haircut as Gawain and Sean Connery as the Green Knight. It also sported a score by Ron Geesin that was textbook 80s synth.

In other words it wasn't a good movie.

However, that doesn't mean that the source material wasn't great. Both of the aforementioned films are based off the classic 14th century epic poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. It's a tale from the legend of King Arthur, with Sir Gawain being one of the Knights of the Round Table. Arthurian legends have been fodder for Hollywood going back decades and this May we'll be getting another one courtesy of director David Lowery and A24.

A24 just dropped the first trailer for THE GREEN KNIGHT a retelling of the epic poem. The story will find Gawain (played by HOTEL MUMBAI's Dev Patel) King Arthur's reckless and headstrong nephew, embarking on a quest to confront the eponymous Green Knight, a gigantic green-skinned stranger. I have to say this trailer looks incredibly spooky. It almost plays like a horror film rather than a medieval fantasy. Additionally, I find Dev Patel to be an incredibly talented and compelling actor so I'm interested to see what he does with this kind of material. Plus I'll pretty much watch Joel Edgerton read the phone book so this movie already has my money.

So what did you guys think? Are you excited for this film? Are you a fan of Arthurian legends? Did anyone out there besides me watch SWORD OF THE VALIANT when they were kids? Sound off in the comments below!

THE GREEN KNIGHT starring Dev Patel, Joel Edgerton, Barry Keoghan, Ralph Ineson, Alicia Vikander, Sean Harris charges into theaters May 29, 2020.
