Pacific Rim / Godzilla / Kong crossover is a possibility

Legendary is currently building a MonsterVerse around the classic characters Godzilla and King Kong, giant monsters that have taken on a whole lot of adversaries over their many decades of existence. They've even fought each other, and will be doing so again when the build-up of GODZILLA, KONG: SKULL ISLAND, and the upcoming GODZILLA sequel leads to the mash-up GODZILLA VS. KONG in 2020.

The Godzilla and Kong movies aren't the only kaiju movies Legendary makes. The company is also responsible for the "mecha vs. kaiju" PACIFIC RIM films, and it does seem sort of odd that they would keep PACIFIC RIM separate from their other kaiju properties. If two can cross over, why couldn't three?

Steven S. DeKnight, director of the upcoming sequel PACIFIC RIM: UPRISING, recently told us that the goal is to expand the PACIFIC RIM franchise to the scope of something like STAR WARS and STAR TREK – sequels, standalone spin-offs, maybe a TV show, etc. Speaking with Collider, DeKnight revealed that there has "a lot of discussion" about the possibility of a PACIFIC RIM / GODZILLA / KONG crossover being part of that expanded universe.

Look I think it would be fantastic to have the Pacific Rim universe join Legendary’s Monster Universe, it seems like a natural step. And part of the big overall plan after the third movie we’ve talked about is that could happen, it’s always a possibility. It’s by far not a certainty; it’s merely theoretical at this point, but as a fan myself I would love to see that happen."

It is all just talk for now, we shouldn't let our dreams flood with images of Godzilla and Kong taking on the mecha Jaegers of PACIFIC RIM just yet, but it is something that could happen somewhere down the line. I would be all for it myself, simply for the sake of the action and visuals. The MonsterVerse and the world of PACIFIC RIM are obviously different realities, but with portals into other dimensions having been established as part of the PACIFIC RIM world, it seems very simple to have a portal open up that would allow Jaegers and other kaiju to enter the MonsterVerse.

It may never happen, though. One thing we can definitely look forward to is the release of PACIFIC RIM: UPRISING on March 23, 2018.
