Paramount and Spyglass aiming to release new Scream film in 2021

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

Last November, it was announced that Spyglass Media Group would be reviving the SCREAM film franchise, and now Paramount Pictures has come on board to co-produce and distribute the new film. As reported by Variety, "Paramount will market and distribute worldwide in all media with select international territories and domestic pay 1 television being handled by Spyglass."

The current plan is for the new SCREAM to begin filming in Wilmington, North Carolina sometime in late summer, aiming for a 2021 release.

READY OR NOT's Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett will be directing the film, which will be the first SCREAM to not be directed by the legendary Wes Craven. James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick have written the screenplay. Vanderbilt is also producing, through Project X Entertainment, alongside Paul Neinstein and William Sherak. Original SCREAM writer Kevin Williamson is on board as executive producer, as is Chad Villella, Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett's partner in the Radio Silence filmmaking team.

Williamson has said that Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett's

take on the movie is both original, inventive and honors Wes’ legacy in a wonderful way. ‘Ready or Not’ was my favorite horror film of last year and I can’t wait to see what their amazing talents bring to the ‘Scream’ universe. I’m thrilled to be a part of it."

David Arquette is officially signed on to reprise the role of Dewey Riley, the character he played in all four previous SCREAM movies, so this is clearly not a remake, it's a follow-up to the established storyline. Franchise heroine Neve Campbell is also in talks to return.
