Patient Zero first look: Matt Smith confronts Stanley Tucci

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

The zombie genre gets a makeover – supposedly – in PATIENT ZERO, Screen Gems’ September release starring Natalie Dormer, Matt Smith and Stanley Tucci. Entertainment Weekly has just put out the first official still from the film, which shows Smith squaring off with Tucci, the latter being one of the movie’s “infected” villains.

Here’s the plot:

In PATIENT ZERO, an unprecedented global pandemic of a super strain of rabies has turned the majority of humankind into highly intelligent, streamlined killers known as ‘The Infected.’ One victim, Morgan (Matt Smith), who is asymptomatic and can communicate with the infected, leads the last survivors on a hunt for Patient Zero and a cure.

Director Stefan Ruzowitzky had this to say on the subject of how the infected differ from zombies: “The great days of zombies are a little bit over. It’s time for something new. [The infected] have a lot of energy, they’re fast, they’re good-looking. Not those walking vegetables.”

PATIENT ZERO opens September 2nd.
