I never got a chance to watch the original PENNY DREADFUL series, though I had heard great things (it's certainly on my ever-growing queue list!) Though, a part of me always kinda felt the premise sounded like a slightly more artsy version of LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMAN, since it was about
[bringing] classic literary characters like Dr. Frankenstein and Dorian Gray…and other characters into a new light by exploring their origin stories in this psychological thriller that takes place in the dark corners of Victorian London.

However, the show's second season – PENNY DREADFUL: CITY OF ANGELS – looks very intriguing. It stars Natalie Dormer as the new villain of the show, Magda, who takes various shapes and forms as she manipulates mankind. Showtime has also just released a featurette showing off the special make-up and costume designs used to help Dormer transform into her various personas, which you can see embedded above. Meanwhile, here's the official synopsis for the new season:
A spiritual descendant of the original “Penny Dreadful” story set in Victorian-era London, “Penny Dreadful: City of Angels” opens in 1938 Los Angeles, a time and place deeply infused with social and political tension. Honestly looks pretty good! I might have to finish that first season after all (and I even kinda liked the 2003 LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN film…)
Meanwhile, PENNY DREADFUL: CITY OF ANGELS will premiere on Showtime Sunday, April 26th @ 10/9c.
