True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto is making a horror film for Blumhouse

True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto is writing a horror movie for Blumhouse Productions, and the plan is that he will direct it as well

True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto is no longer in charge of HBO’s anthology crime series (the upcoming fourth season, True Detective: Night Country, comes from the mind of Issa López), and while it was announced earlier this year that Pizzolatto would be writing the Blade reboot for Marvel, he has since been replaced on that project by Logan writer Michael Green. But he’s still staying busy, and during an appearance at the Austin Film Festival he revealed that he’s working with Blumhouse Productions – who most recently gave the world Five Nights at Freddy’s – on a horror project.

According to Slash Film, Pizzolatto said, “Blumhouse contracted me to write and direct a horror movie, which I gave them the script for last week. … I just took a meeting with them once and we just kind of shot the shit and we had some common friends and we were wrapping up and Couper [Samuelson], the VP of Blumhouse, said, ‘Look, if you ever have an idea for a horror movie …’ And I go, ‘Actually, I have one idea for a horror movie and I’ve had it for 10 years,’ and I told it to him and he’s like, ‘Let’s go make this.’ I’ve got to see what they think of the script, but hopefully we’ll be doing that.

As for what kind of horror movie it is… well, it sounds like it’s exactly what fans would want to see from the creator of True Detective. Pizzolatto told the Austin Film Festival attendees, “It’s kind of an occult detective story.

The first season of True Detective was “kind of an occult detective story” and had the following synopsis: Constructed as a nonlinear narrative, season one focuses on Louisiana State Police homicide detectives Rustin “Rust” Cohle (Matthew McConaughey) and Martin “Marty” Hart (Woody Harrelson), who investigated the murder of prostitute Dora Lange in 1995. Seventeen years later, they must revisit the investigation, along with several other unsolved crimes. During this time, Hart’s infidelity threatens his marriage and Cohle struggles to cope with his troubled past.

True Detective season 1 was great. Pizzolatto returned for seasons 2 and 3, which weren’t received with as much enthusiasm as the first season was… so I haven’t gotten around to watch them yet.
