Sam Raimi is a genius. Love him or hate him, the man brought us one of the biggest franchises ever in SPIDER-MAN. Not to mention he brought us another franchise that is widley praised by us genre fans. Of course I’m talking about THE EVIL DEAD franchise. Now I haven’t heard a single negative thing from anyone about any of the EVIL DEAD films. That’s saying something.
Well if you’ve been nodding your head along with me, I’ve got some great news! According to Variety, Mr. Raimi is finally returning to the genre after running around with Tobey Maguire in tights for years. And he’s not just producing, or letting his name score some flick some publicity. No, Raimi is taking this one full throttle. The flick is called DRAG ME TO HELL. That’s just beautiful. Raimi will be directing and also wrote the script with his brother Ivan Raimi.
The paper thin synopsis is that the film is a morality tale about the unwitting recipient of a supernatural curse. That’s all we got thus far. The flick is financed through Raimi and Rob Tapert’s Ghost House. It’s set to start production in early 2008.
One thing that caught my eye was the fact that the Raimi brothers actually wrote DRAG ME TO HELL directly following another script of theirs. Something called ARMY OF DARKNESS. So this is vintage Raimi folks, not that the man has last any swager.
Tapert also had some great stuff to say concerning Raimi and the film:
“Sam calls it a ‘spook-a-blast,’ a wild ride with all the chills and spills that ‘Evil Dead’ delivered, without relying on the excessive violence of that film. When one has done three very expensive movies, they get used to eating caviar. Sam will have to ponder what it means to come down from the mountaintop for a moment. The appeal to Sam on ‘Drag Me to Hell’ was returning to what he had once done and loved doing, which was entertaining a very specific group of fans and providing a roller coaster ride for them. He doesn’t have the enormous pressure here that goes with handling a hundreds of millions of dollars franchise.”
I can’t really express how happy I am. Let’s hope this one gets some distribution and is put on the fast track asap.
