Over the weekend, Netflix made the bold declaration that Red Notice, starring Dwayne Johnson, Ryan Reynolds, and Gal Gadot, had the biggest opening day in their film history. The streamer didn’t release any hard data to back up these claims but we are getting some numbers via Samba TV and it does indicate that Red Notice was a huge hit over the weekend.

Per Samba TV, Red Notice was watched by 4.2 million U.S. households in its first weekend streaming on Netflix. These are some of the highest numbers reported by Samba TV since they became the go-to. third party company to retrieve streaming viewership data. As previously stated, Samba TV doesn’t give us the full picture because it only measures analytics from certain Smart TV’s that opt-in to be tracked by the platform but it’s honestly the closest we’re going to get to transparency until streaming services decide to disclose the full data on their own.

Red Notice‘s audience eclipses the first weekend viewership of any movie on HBO Max, Amazon, and Disney+ as measured by Samba TV. Red Notice is higher than HBO Max’s first 3 days of Mortal Kombat (3.8 million), Wonder Woman 1984 which also starred Gadot (2.2 million), and Dune (1.9 million). It also tops Amazon’s first four days of the Tomorrow War (2.4 million) and Disney+’s Soul (2.4 million).

Another big takeaway is that Red Notice also topped the figures for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings which hit Disney+ on the same day as the Netflix film and registered 1.7 million U.S. households in its first weekend. Shang-Chi is just wrapping up its box office run and has cleared $224 million domestically and proves that there is a hunger to continue going to the movies rather than just watching a film at home. That being said, Red Notice indicates the power of having a film headlined by popular movie stars because this was clearly the pull of the film which overcame not-so-great reviews (36% rotten on Rotten Tomatoes) to become a hit with viewers (92% fresh audience score).

Per the official synopsis from Netflix, “When an Interpol-issued Red Notice — the highest level warrant to hunt and capture the world’s most wanted— goes out, the FBI’s top profiler John Hartley (Dwayne Johnson) is on the case. His global pursuit finds him smack dab in the middle of a daring heist where he’s forced to partner with the world’s greatest art thief Nolan Booth (Ryan Reynolds) in order to catch the world’s most wanted art thief, “The Bishop” (Gal Gadot). The high-flying adventure that ensues takes the trio around the world, across the dance floor, trapped in a secluded prison, into the jungle and, worst of all for them, constantly into each other’s company. The all star cast is joined by Ritu Arya and Chris Diamantopoulos. Directed and written by Rawson Marshall Thurber (Central Intelligence, Skyscraper) and produced by Hiram Garcia, Dwayne Johnson and Dany Garcia of Seven Bucks Productions, Beau Flynn’s Flynn Picture Co. and Thurber’s Bad Version, Inc., Red Notice is a stylish globe-trotting game of cat-and-mouse (and cat).”
