Revolution comes to Gilead in trailer for season 3 of The Handmaid’s Tale

The Handmaid’s Tale, the award-winning Hulu series based upon the classic novel by Margaret Atwood, is set to return for its third season. During the conclusion of the second season, June/Offred (Elisabeth Moss) made a questionable choice which had many fans yelling at their screens, but the new trailer for the upcoming season shows us the results of that choice and what she has planned for the nation of Gilead. It also gives us a touch of hope that the near-constant oppression and misery could soon be at an end. “I think season three, there’s a level of triumph and [a notion of] ‘blessed be the fight,’” creator Bruce Miller told THR last year. “Certainly, we’re going to hit ups and downs, just like we did [in season two], but that there’s kind of a level of rebellious spirit in June that will make her more hard-charging, and the victories will be a little bit more visceral.” Although I’ve been a fan of the series, I’m hoping that Miller chooses to end it sooner rather than later as this isn’t exactly the type of show which benefits from being stretched out over multiple seasons.

An official synopsis of The Handmaid’s Tale:

Adapted from the classic novel by Margaret Atwood, The Handmaid’s Tale is the story of life in the dystopia of Gilead, a totalitarian society in what was formerly the United States. Facing environmental disasters and a plunging birthrate, Gilead is ruled by a twisted fundamentalism in its militarized ‘return to traditional values’. As one of the few remaining fertile women, Offred (Elisabeth Moss) is a Handmaid in the Commander’s household, one of the caste of women forced into sexual servitude as a last desperate attempt to repopulate the world. In this terrifying society, Offred must navigate between Commanders, their cruel Wives, domestic Marthas, and her fellow Handmaids – where anyone could be a spy for Gilead – all with one goal: to survive and find the daughter that was taken from her.

The third season of The Handmaid’s Tale will debut on Hulu on June 5, 2019.
