Ripley w/o Alien?

What in the world is Sigourney Weaver talking about? The women goes around talking aimlessly about her previous genre projects like no tomorrow. You may remember a while ago she said how another GHOSTBUSTERS film would no way happen… well that’s quickly looking like a lie. She’s talked even more about a new GHOSTBUSTERS flick recently, but I’m here to tell you about what she had to say regarding a certain classic character of hers: Ripley.

Could we see Ripley back on the big screen battling those pesky aliens? Accoring to Weaver, yes and no. I’ll just toss a quote your way coming from MTV, who recently had a chance to catch up with Weaver (below):

“What we’re interested in is taking the character of Ripley and seeing what other science fiction story we can tell about someone who has lived several lives.”

What the hell does that mean? We might be seeing Ripley battling a completely different type of alien? Hmm. What’s your take on this? I’m torn to be honest with you. That creature above is epic…. if done right a Ripley v Classic Alien flick would go down smooth. But Ripley versus something new? That might work too… though I’m not so sure. My gripe is we’re used to seeing Ripley battle those cheeky bastards, to see a obviously much older Ripley facing off against something entirely new might be too much to take.

The kicker is that Ridley Scott was also involved with these comments. Weaver apparently had a conversation with the director extraordinaire recently and they both agreed that in order to bring Ripley back to life, they’d need something new and fresh. To check out a bit more of what Weaver had to say, head right over here.

My take on all of this… drop Ripley completely. Weaver has aged immensely and I think that ship might’ve sailed a long time ago. Also, drop the whole Predator deal and even toss out the idea of the Aliens coming to Earth. Take it back to basics. Now I’m not talking about a remake. I’m talking about getting a new group of gritty characters, send them to space to check out this Alien race, and have at it!

Of course time will tell if Weaver’s comments hold any promise to them. As always, keep it here for any and all Alien updates as we hear them.
