The Fast Family just got a little bit bigger. Vin Diesel has taken to his Instagram page to reveal that EGOT-winning actress, Rita Moreno, will be playing his grandmother in Fast X, the next and presumably final installment of the Fast & Furious franchise.
Diesel posted a video on his Instagram page to make the announcement official. Diesel says, “It’s been my dream forever to work with Rita Moreno, and the fact that she’s here playing my grandmother makes my soul smile. I’m so blessed.” In the video, he’s sitting between Moreno and his longtime Fast co-star, Michelle Rodriguez. As Diesel pans the video, Moreno says, “You know what, I think I was getting…I think my old age was waiting for you to invite me. Isn’t that nice?” You can check out the Instagram video below!
Vin Diesel has made it no secret that he wanted Moreno to join the Fast Franchise. Before the release of F9: The Fast Saga, Diesel told Variety that he wanted Moreno to specifically play his grandmother in the next film. I guess if you manifest something long enough, it will actually happen.
Diesel has made a lot of cast announcements via Instagram for Fast X. He revealed Brie Larson was joining the franchise via the social media platform and he also posted behind-the-scenes shots with franchise newcomers Jason Momoa and Alan Ritchson. The OG cast has also been showcased as of late with Jordana Brewster, Michelle Rodriguez, Ludacris, Sung Kang, and Nathalie Emmanuel also popping up in posts celebrating their arrival to the film.
These announcements go a long way to quiet the drama that was building once director Justin Lin departed the project a mere six days into production. The reports suggested that it was over tensions and creative differences between Diesel and Universal Pictures. While that put a little stain on the production, Louis Leterrier was soon announced as his replacement and things have appeared to be smooth sailing ever since.
