"Boston, Massachusetts, I choose you!"

Just when you thought you couldn't get enough of Hollywood's Canadian sweetheart, Ryan Reynolds, it's been announced that production has begun on yet another project starring the DEADPOOL and POKEMON: DETECTIVE PIKACHU alum. I'm talking about FREE GUY, an upcoming adventure-comedy from 20th Century Fox directed by STRANGER THINGS and NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM trilogy producer/helmer Shawn Levy. The film, which is set to tell the story of a lonely bank teller who discovers he is actually a background character in the open-world videogame Free City, has recently pressed Start on production in Boston.

Starring alongside Reynolds for the Truman Show-like premise are KILLING EVE's Jodie Comer, GET OUT star Lil Rel Howery, THOR: RAGNAROK director Taika Waititi, STRANGER THINGS actor Joe Keery, and MULAN's Utkarsh Ambudkar.

In addition to leading the film, Reynolds will also produce alongside Greg Berlanti (RIVERDALE), Sarah Schecter (DOOM PATROL), Adam Kolbrenner (PRISONERS), Dan Levine (ARRIVAL), Mary McLaglen (RED SPARROW), Josh McLaglen (LOGAN), with George Dewey and Mike McGrath serving as executive producers.

Set for a July 3, 2020 release in theaters, FREE GUY sounds as if it could place Reynolds at the heart of a myriad of off-the-wall events. After all, anyone who's played video games in the past several years knows that the industry has grown by leaps and bounds, thereby giving developers the ability to create vast, complicated worlds filled with endless possibilities. The question now is: What kind of set up is Free City? Will this be a Grand Theft Auto affair or something more akin to Crackdown or Far Cry? Will Reynolds and his co-stars unlock powers beyond their wildest dreams or be forced to confront their own pixelated mortality and escape the game? We'll have to wait until more details about the project come about, but until then, we can all speculate wildly about the film's promising premise. Be sure to put your quarters up for this one.
