Telephone customer service jobs aren’t the only things leaving America bound for India. Veteran filmmaker Paul Schrader is swapping Hollywood for opportunity in the land of Bollywood.
The longtime director (AMERICAN GIGOLO, AUTO FOCUS) and frequent Scorsese collaborator (TAXI DRIVER, RAGING BULL) is pulling up stakes for a taste of Mumbai. And what would prompt such a move to the opposite side of the globe? “I take a good look around and what I see is a barren, barren place,” Schrader explains. “In terms of the financial community, in terms of audiences, in terms of distribution. It’s cold out there.”
When he gets there, he’ll work on an action flick called EXTREME CITY, “a cross-cultural tale that will center on an American man who travels to India to help resolve a kidnapping case for his father-in-law, only to get caught up in a gangster plot.” With random musical numbers, of course.
