Jake Johnson (New Girl, Tag) is getting behind the camera for his feature directorial debut with Self Reliance. This film finds the main character, Tommy, playing a dangerous game for a lofty sum of cash, but at what price? Hulu acquired the U.S. rights to Self Reliance after a competitive bid with MRC and Paramount Global Content. In addition to directing and writing the feature, Johnson also stars alongside Anna Kendrick (Pitch Perfect, A Simple Favor), Natalie Morales (No Hard Feelings, Dead to Me), Andy Samberg (Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping), GaTa (Dave), Emily Hampshire (Schitt’s Creek, 12 Monkeys), Mary Holland (Golden Arm, Senior Year), Boban Marjanović, Christopher Lloyd (Back to the Future, Nobody) and Wayne Brady (The Wayne Brady Show, Whose Line Is It Anyway?).

When a middle-aged man is invited into a limo by famous actor Andy Samberg, his dull life takes a thrilling turn. Johnson is offered a chance to win a million dollars in a dark web reality TV show, where assassins from all over the world attempt to kill him for 30 days. The catch? He can’t be killed if he’s not entirely alone, leading him to recruit an unlikely team to help him survive.
In Hulu’s Self Reliance trailer, we find Tommy attempting to recruit friends, loved ones, and strangers to remain by his side until he achieves his goal. However, as the game becomes more complicated, Tommy finds people are reluctant to place themselves in harm’s way. However, when he meets Maddy, they combine efforts to beat the game’s mysterious benefactors and defy all odds. It’s too bad the game’s rules are about to change, making their mission far more complex and dangerous than anticipated.
Lonely Island and Walcott Productions produce Self Reliance, while Ali Bell, Joe Hardesty, and Jake Johnson are producers. Executive producers include Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer, and Jorma Taccone.
