Shudder orders 10-episode run of horror genre dissection talk show The Core

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

As much as I love horror films, there's a part of me that enjoys seeing how they're made even more. Four years ago, I appeared in an independent horror film project with my friends called Tainted Meat. In the film, I was devoured and pulled apart by zombies within the first few minutes. I had an absolute blast helping to create the project, and that's why this next bit of news is of particular interest to me.

Today, the AMC Network's subscription service, Shudder, which specializes in bringing quality horror content to fans of the genre, announced that the service will debut a new weekly version of "The Core", beginning on November 16th. With the format of the show retooled, the series will take on the guise of a weekly dissection of genre filmmaking hosted by director and genre fan Mickey Keating. In addition to others who've dabbled in the art of frightful filmmaking, Keating will examine the onscreen methodologies and real-life psychologies that have been sending shock-waves through the bones of horror fans for decades.

In talking about the new show, Keating told Variety – who exclusively broke the news earlier this morning – that, "’The Core’ is a twisted celebration of the magic of genre filmmaking, and I can honestly say there has never been anything like it,” said Keating. “There’s no outlet that cares as much about the genre fan as Shudder, and I’m thrilled they’ll be bringing ‘The Core’ to the fan community.”

By way of a production partnership with Uproxx, "The Core" will feature Keating as he is joined by a special guest from the genre community, including acclaimed DJ and music producer Flying Lotus AKA Steven Ellison, actor and producer Elijah Wood, Canadian cult favorites The Soska Sisters (big love to my Twisted Twins, Jen and Sylvia), and filmmaker Rodney Ascher.

Recently, Owen Shiflett, vice president of development over at Shudder, told Variety the following, “Our members not only love to watch horror films and series, they want to know everything they can about the process of making the stuff they love. Shudder is dedicated to offering fans programming that they won’t get anywhere else. ‘The Core’ is the very definition of a Shudder Original: clever, insightful, and with a unique approach to the genre and its history that fans can truly appreciate,”

While I'm not certain of how many streaming services my wallet can support, I might have to pony up some dough for when the rebooted version of "The Core" arrives on Shudder come November 16th. Will you be watching? Let us know in the comments section below.
