Spider-Man: No Way Home webs up $800M+ to become the No. 1 movie of 2021

Update: The numbers are in and Spider-Man: No Way Home has officially swung past $800M at the global box office. This makes the friendly neighborhood wall-crawler’s latest big-screen adventure the highest-grossing film of 2021 with $813.9M in worldwide receipts through Wednesday.

Per Deadline‘s report, the Top Ten markets through Wednesday are the UK ($57.1M), Mexico ($43.9M), France ($28.7M), Korea ($28.6M) Brazil ($26.6M), Australia ($26.3M), India ($23.5M), Russia ($22.2M), Italy ($16.1M) and Germany ($15.5M).

Analysts suspect that Spider-Man: No Way Home will perform well through the holiday rush despite many theaters having to reduce capacity once again due to the Omicron variant.

Spider-Man: No Way Home has only been out for a matter of days and it’s already closing in on the highest-grossing global total of the pandemic.

No Way Home grossed $31.4 million on Tuesday which off slightly by 15% from the $37.1 million the film earned on Monday. Keep in mind that all schools weren’t out for holiday break just yet and many adults are still working. These weekday grosses during pandemic times are simply amazing and they’d be just as stellar during regular moviegoing times. As of Tuesday, Spider-Man: No Way Home had grossed $328.7 million at the domestic box office through five days which represents the second-best five-day gross of all-time after Avengers: Endgame ($427 million). It’s also the highest December five-day gross of all time as it has beaten Star Wars: The Force Awakens for that title ($325.4 million).

Globally, Spider-Man is about to take down 007 as the highest-grossing worldwide title of the pandemic. The film’s worldwide total, as of Tuesday, stood at $751.3 million which is pretty close to No Time To Die’s $774 million global gross. Once Wednesday and Thursday numbers are finalized, Spider-Man: No Way Home will have claimed this title. According to “Deadline“, Spider-Man: No Way Home stands a chance to gross $1 billion globally without a behemoth like China in play. Sony Pictures is still awaiting a release date for that market.

In other box office news, The King’s Man opened in Tuesday previews ahead of its Wednesday-wide release and took in $800,000 from showtimes that began at 4:00 PM. The film is tracking for a $20 million Wednesday-Sunday gross and this preview figure COULD keep that target in its sights. Some comparisons for The King’s Man include Assassin’s Creed, which opened in December in the shadow of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Assassin’s Creed took in $1.35 million in previews before opening to $17.7 million in five days and $22.2 million in six. Another example cited has been Passengers, which also opened during that timeframe. That film opened to preview numbers that hit $1.2 million before opening to $22.1 million over five days and $29.7 million over six. The King’s Man has to deal with Spider-Man and The Matrix Resurrections for some of the same audience and has to deal with skewing slightly older, a detriment for moviegoing during the pandemic. It’s possible it comes in lower than some of these examples but we will have to wait and see.

The Matrix Resurrections and Sing 2 did not hold preview showings on Tuesday so their opening numbers will be updated accordingly once they are made available.
