It’s been in the works since before SPIDER-MAN 3 made tons of cash (and a few disappointed fans), but the musical version of the webbed wonder is finally coming together.
According to IESB, the stage show has already found its Mary Jane Watson in actress Evan Rachel Wood. I don’t know how well she can sing live, but I already like her infinitely better for the part than who we got thrice on film. Perhaps best known for her breakthrough in THIRTEEN (from TWILIGHT director Catherine Hardwicke), she’s been working steadily for the past decade, most recently as Mickey Rourke’s estranged daughter in THE WRESTLER.
Wood says that rehearsals start next June, with the Broadway show expected to launch in 2010. The production is reportedly still chasing Jim Sturgess (ACROSS THE UNIVERSE, 21) for the titular tuneful wall-crawler. Julie Taymor (TITUS, FRIDA) is directing, with songs (including those delivered by a “Geek Chorus”) to be provided by U2’s Bono and The Edge.
Other characters included in the production are Peter Parker and his costumed alter-ego (obviously), publisher J. Jonah Jameson, villain Norman Osborn/Green Goblin, and (clearly deviating from the source material) a woman named Arachne who is “turned into a spider for her hubris and lack of respect for the gods.”
