Split vs Rings: who won the top box-office spot this Super Bowl weekend?

Last Updated on July 21, 2021

Back on Thursday I gave my prediction on the upcoming Super Bowl weekend's box-office. You can check out the whole forecast here. But to sum up, I predicted SPLIT would win the weekend over the new chapter in the RING franchise RINGS. Turns out I was right! Kinda. I say "kinda" right in that I didn't guess the numbers correctly. Oh boo-hoo, right? Yeah, but still, it bothers me.

Here was what I predicted:

1. SPLIT – 13.5
2. RINGS –  9.8

I choose RINGS to score 9.8 based on the idea it would follow the path of 'old school flick, new school sequel' BLAIR WITCH. The thing I didn't take into account was BLAIR WITCH boasted an R-rating, while the new RINGS carries a more teenager-friendly PG-13. Drat. That makes a HUGE difference; they say by making a flick R-rated, vs PG-13, you effectively cut your potential box-office IN HALF! Crazy. huh?  Maybe DEADPOOL is helping to change that though.

Anyhow, RINGS ended up with a healthier than expected (by me at least) 13.0 million this past weekend. This again was an over-sight on my part as the late three theatrical horror flicks to premiere this year all debut with almost exactly $13 million.

Here's a quick rundown:

UNDERWORLD: BLOOD WARS

$13,688,751

THE BYE BYE MAN

$13,501,349

RESIDENT EVIL: THE FINAL CHAPTER

$13,601,682

Hurm… interesting… it seems there are 13 million bucks worth of horror fans religiously making their way to whatever the new fright flick opens that weekend. Good for them!

Here are the weekend actuals:

1. SPLIT –  14.5
2. RINGS – 13.0

Boy, SPLIT is really turning out to be quite… wait for it… Unbreakable. (Cue this look)

I have no idea who won the Super Bowl last night.
