Stanley Tucci reveals he privately battled cancer for three years

Stanley Tucci is probably one of the most beloved actors working in the industry today and he’s one of those celebrity figures who always seems upbeat and positive. He’s about the love of the craft and putting in good work, separating that line for the audience between the actor and the character. You would never really know if Stanley Tucci was struggling in the public eye but the actor has revealed that he endured a very private battle with cancer surrounded only by his immediate family.

Tucci revealed in a new interview with “Vera Magazine” that he had been diagnosed with a tumor at the base of his tongue that was too big to operate on. The alternative was a required high dose of radiation and chemo. This is something Tucci didn’t originally want to go through, having watched his first wife, Kate Spath-Tucci, die of breast cancer in 2009 at the age of 47. The actor said, “I’d vowed I’d never do anything like that, because my first wife died of cancer, and to watch her go through those treatments for years was horrible.”

Once Tucci made the decision to move forward with treatments, the actor said his family was constantly by his side, including his wife Felicity Blunt, twins Isabel and Nicolo, and Camila, from his first marriage, and 5-year-old Matteo and 2-year-old Emilia, who he shares with Blunt. Their support was crucial as Tucci went through the worst of it, including having to be on a feeding tube for six months. The actor said, “The kids were great, but it was hard for them. I could barely make it to the twins’ high school graduation.”

Thankfully this story has a happy ending as Tucci says the cancer is unlikely to return. That being said, he reveals that its effects appear to be permanent. He goes on to say, “Cancer makes you more afraid and less afraid at the same time. I feel much older than I did before I was sick. But you still want to get ahead and get things done.”

Really happy that Stanley Tucci successfully got through his battle with cancer and even if some of its effects remain, the actor seems very positive about his future and it also shows the power of having the love and support of your family. They rallied hard behind him and I’m sure he believes he couldn’t have gotten through it without them.
