Spielberg’s next Robopocalypse? Also wants to direct Edgardo Mortara drama

JoBloJoBlo

Steven Spielberg has a few different projects he would like to direct, and now you can add another to the list. Variety is reporting Spielberg will re-team with his LINCOLN and MUNICH screenwriter Tony Kushner for a religious drama called THE KIDNAPPING OF EDGARDO MORTARA.

The film will be based on David Kertzer's nonfiction novel, which is about an Italian Jew who was raised Catholic after being removed from his parents in 1858 at the age of seven by authorities of the Papal States. Edgardo Mortara later entered the Augustinian Order and became a priest.

Tony Kushner has just started working on the script for the adaptation, and THE KIDNAPPING OF EDGARDO MORTARA won't be Steven Spielberg's next directing gig. According to Variety, the filmmaker is trying to decide between ROBOPOCALYPSE and the historical drama MONTEZUMA. Sources say ROBOPOCALYPSE is the frontrunner, and one source believes Spielberg is close to finalizing a budget for the sci-fi flick. We also learned last month Steven Spielberg is also interested in directing a remake of WEST SIDE STORY.

Out of all Steven Spielberg's planned projects, the one I want to see the most is definitely ROBOPOCALYPSE. We've been hearing about the project for years now, and Spielberg hasn't directed something involving sci-fi since 2005's WAR OF THE WORLDS. And no, the aliens in INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL don't count. Which project would you like to see Steven Spielberg work on first?
