Jeremy Slater is a name we’ve heard connected to a lot of genre projects in recent years, including Mortal Kombat II, The Umbrella Academy, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, Moon Knight, the Exorcist TV series, and even Josh Trank’s Fantastic Four, as well as a still-unmade Insidious spin-off called Thread. Now, The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that Slater is set to make his directorial debut with a horror thriller called Summoner, and the project is off to a great start because Kevin Bacon has signed on to star in it!
Bacon’s previous genre credits include Friday the 13th, Tremors, Flatliners, Stir of Echoes, Hollow Man, The Darkness, You Should Have Left, They/Them, The Toxic Avenger, MaXXXine, The Bondsman, and the upcoming Family Movie, which he directed alongside his wife, Kyra Sedgwick.
What is Summoner about?
Slater’s script centers on an exorcist named Jefferson Haddock (Bacon), who is called into an isolated witness protection property to deal with a terrifying demon, accidentally unleashing a force that threatens to end him and everything around him.
Genre filmmaker Andy Muschietti is producing the film alongside Barbara Muschietti and Russell Ackerman, under their Nocturna banner. Nocturna was also behind the recently released horror movie They Will Kill You.
Bacon has previously explained why he enjoys the horror genre so much. “If a new horror film piques my interest, I’m front and center opening weekend … I like the experience, because when I go to a movie as a … consumer, I want to feel things. Whatever it is, I want to feel things deeply,” he told Looper in 2022. “You can feel sad. You can get tears coming out of your eyes. You can laugh hysterically. You can jump. You can get scared. You can get creeped out. You can walk out of the theater with an uneasy feeling. These are feelings, and I like that. … I like to do horror because the stakes are very high, and that means that there’s good stuff to play. In life and death situations, those are good things to play.“
