Josh Ruben recently directed two entertaining horror movies, Scare Me and Werewolves Within, and now he’s producing a horror drama called Surgat, which will be directed by Michael Borowiec and Sam Marine Borowiec. Variety reports that the film is going to star Francesca Reale, who played ill-fated lifeguard Heather in season 3 of Stranger Things, and Dagmara Domińczyk, who is best known for playing Karolina Novotney on Succession.

Surgat will tell the story of

a young pregnant woman, Heather, whose life is thrown into chaos when a demonic spirit is released upon her home, possessing her family members one by one and turning them against her. Heather is forced to learn what lengths she’ll go to in order to save her baby – and herself. Rather than just possessing his victim, Surgat, the demon, possesses everyone else around his target, ultimately forcing them to become the monsters they fear most: Their true selves.

The directors say Surgat will be “equal parts supernatural horror and psychological drama – Hereditary meets Rosemary’s Baby. Surgat explores the complex relationships of a family struggling with grief, poverty, addiction and denial, and what happens when secrets that have long been buried start to surface.”

Sean Lyness is producing the film alongside Ruben. Surgat is currently at the financing stage, and is being presented to potential co-production partners, financiers, and sales agents at the Frontières Market, which runs parallel to the Fantasia Film Festival in Montreal over the next four days.

Michael Borowiec and Sam Marine Borowiec previously directed the film Man Underground, which won the Best First Feature award at the Fantasia Film Festival in 2016. I haven’t seen Man Underground, but I liked Ruben’s movies and Surgat sounds interesting to me, so I look forward to seeing how it’s going to turn out.
