Tarantino says he plans to end his feature film career after his next film

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

It would appear as if today is all about endings. Earlier this afternoon, it was announced that The Walking Dead comic book series will release its final issue this Wednesday, thereby putting a bullet in the brain of Robert Kirkman's 15-year long zombie survival drama. And now, thanks to a new interview with GQ Australia, we've learned that iconic filmmaker Quentin Tarantino thinks he's done developing feature films, possibly after the release of his tenth motion picture.

“I think when it comes to theatrical movies, I’ve come to the end of the road,” the RESERVOIR DOGS and JACKIE BROWN helmer told the Australian entertainment outlet. The KILL BILL mastermind then added that he would like to continue working on "creative" projects for other platforms.

“I see myself writing books and starting to write theatre, so I’ll still be creative,” Tarantino explained. “I just think I’ve given all I have to give to movies.”

While ten films is the goal for now, Tarantino also said that with his ninth feature, ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD, already receiving such high praise, that he would consider ending his theatrical endeavors after the Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio-starrer swivels its hips into theaters.

“Maybe I’ll stop right now! Maybe I’ll stop while I’m ahead,” said the DEATH PROOF director. “We’ll see.”

It's true that filmmakers have announced their retirement only to come back swinging in the past, though Brad Pitt, who stars as stuntman Cliff Booth in ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD, says that he believes Tarantino is "dead serious" about his move to mosey on into the sunset.

“No, I don’t think he’s bluffing at all,” Pitt remarked. “I think he’s dead serious. And I kind of openly lament that to him, but he understands the math of when he feels like directors start falling off their game. But he has other plans and we’re not going to have to say goodbye for a long time.”

Obvously, Tarantino's thoughts to retire from making major motion pictures does not bode well for his long-gestating R-rated STAR TREK project.

“There’s a script that exists for it now,” the filmmaker said of his profanity-laced journey to the stars. “I need to weigh in on it, but I haven’t been able to do that yet.”

Pfft, you might as well set your phasers to kill, my friends, because I doubt that STAR TREK project is happening now. I could be wrong, but I'm probably not. At the very least, Tarantino did say that he plans to revisit the STAR TREK idea once his new film is signed, sealed, and playing in cinemas throughout the world. Still, I wouldn't go holding your breath or anything.
