The Continental: From the World of John Wick director teases potential season 2

The Continental: From the World of John Wick has wrapped up its three-episode run, but a number of questions were left unanswered, which has fans wondering whether season 2 might be in the works. I haven’t had a chance to watch the series for myself yet, so to be safe, I’ll just say watch out for SPOILERS.

While speaking with GamesRadar, The Continental director and executive producer Albert Hughes said that while he “hasn’t heard anything” about a potential season 2, he has been “daydreaming” about the next stage of the story. “I would like to see if [Winston] becomes what he hated,” Hughes explained. “Absolute power corrupts absolutely. The red bird landing on the ledge with Cormac in episode 1, to then appearing in the penthouse with Winston during the finale, that’s symbolic – like a canary in a coal mine. Does the power go to his head? Does he then learn a lesson about wielding it with a benevolent hand instead of a dictatorial one, which Cormac did?

If a second season does happen, stunt coordinator and action director Larnell Stovall would welcome the excuse to pump up the action. “If you are competing against yourself and measuring the bar high, that’s a good challenge. So, take Yen (Nhung Kate) for example. The first time we see her she puts an iron into a guy’s head – we started off strong. We then had to look at what’s next, which is a scene in a theater,” Stovell said. “So, we made that less about martial arts and more about booby traps, she’s an assassin moving around the room. Like with the Wick movies, there’s tons of action, so you have to do your best, make each one exciting, and include lots of variety with the kills.

The three-part event will explore the origin behind the iconic hotel-for-assassins centerpiece of the John Wick universe through the eyes and actions of a young Winston Scott, as he’s dragged into the Hell-scape of 1970’s New York City to face a past he thought he’d left behind,” reads the official synopsis for The Continental. “Winston charts a deadly course through the hotel’s mysterious underworld in a harrowing attempt to seize the hotel where he will eventually take his future throne.

Unfortunately, The Continental didn’t quite grab audiences the same way the movies did. “The Continental is exactly what I feared it would be: an IP cash grab,” our own Alex Maidy wrote in his review. “The truncated number of episodes made me think that The Continental would tell a propulsive and urgent story, but the bloated running times feel weak and overlong. Despite a great soundtrack of retro tracks, The Continental never justifies its existence.” You can check out the rest of Maidy’s review right here.

In addition to The Continental, there’s another John Wick spin-off on the way with Ballerina, which will star Ana de Armas as a young woman with killer skills who sets out to get revenge when hitmen kill her family. Reeves will appear in the spin-off among other John Wick supporting characters. After the enormous success of John Wick: Chapter 4, Lionsgate is in early development on a fifth chapter as well.
