20th Century Studios has just released the second trailer for the upcoming John David Washington sci-fi flick, The Creator, from Rogue One‘s Gareth Edwards. The new trailer showcases an ultra-wide aspect ratio that presents the movie in 2.76:1, which is comparable to Ben-Hur. It will also be screening in IMAX theaters when released on September 29th.

The official synopsis for The Creator reads:

Amidst a future war between the human race and the forces of artificial intelligence, Joshua (Washington), a hardened ex-special forces agent grieving the disappearance of his wife (Chan), is recruited to hunt down and kill the Creator, the elusive architect of advanced AI who has developed a mysterious weapon with the power to end the war… and mankind itself.  Joshua and his team of elite operatives journey across enemy lines, into the dark heart of AI-occupied territory… only to discover the world-ending weapon he’s been instructed to destroy is an AI in the form of a young child.

John David Washington (Tenet), Gemma Chan (Eternals), Ken Watanabe (Inception), Sturgill Simpson (Dog), newcomer Madeleine Yuna Voyles, and Allison Janney (Juno) lead the cast. Gareth Edwards directs from a screenplay he wrote with Chris Weitz, based on a story by Edwards. Edwards produces alongside Kiri Hart, Jim Spencer, and Amon Milchan. Yariv Milchan, Michael Schaefer, Natalie Lehmann, Nick Meyer, and Zev Foreman executive produce.

Gareth Edwards agreed to direct The Creator in February 2020. Filming began in Thailand in January 2022, with Greg Fraser and Oren Soffer in charge of cinematography. The first look at the film debuted at CinemaCon 2023, winning over a crowd eager to witness the filmmaker’s next endeavor.

The talks around the concept of artificial intelligence have intensified fairly recently. Deepfakes, ChatGPT, AI-produced images, reproduced voices and the like have all been at the forefront of the debate on what constitutes art, artist theft, and, most recently, perpetuity for working actors. In fact, one of the talking points on the recent SAG-AFTRA strike was the studios’ demand to scan background actors’ faces for repeated use in an effort to minimize the hiring of extras. Interestingly, Christopher Nolan, who is a film purist and insists on being more analog, recently outlined how excited he was for the more practical possibilities the technology would offer.
