Hulu subscribers, mark your calendar for December 20 because that’s when Gareth Edwards’ sci-fi action thriller The Creator comes to the streaming platform. Hailed as one of 2023’s most visually engaging films, The Creator takes the compelling evolution of AI to strange and imaginative places.

The film, which stars John David Washington, Gemma Chan, Ken Watanabe, Sturgill Simpson, newcomer Madeleine Yuna Voyles, and Allison Janney, is set amidst a future war between the human race and the forces of artificial intelligence. Joshua (Washington), a hardened ex-special forces agent grieving the disappearance of his wife (Chan), is recruited to hunt down and kill the Creator, the elusive architect of advanced AI who has developed a mysterious weapon with the power to end the war…and mankind itself. Joshua and his team of elite operatives journey across enemy lines, into the dark heart of AI-occupied territory, only to discover the world-ending weapon he’s been instructed to destroy is an AI in the form of a young child (Voyles).

JoBlo’s Editor-in-Chief, Chris Bumbray, reviewed The Creator in September, saying it’s “one of the better science-fiction movies to come along in the last few years and should elevate Edwards’ status as one of the best genre directors in the biz.”

The Creator grossed $104 million against a budget of $80 million. However, don’t let the numbers deter you from experiencing this emotionally-charged and effects-driven epic. In addition to receiving generally positive reviews from critics, The Creator earned two nominations at the 51st Saturn Awards, including Best Science Fiction Film and Film Visual/Special Effects.

It’s an excellent film to fit into your December schedule before marathons of A Christmas StoryHome Alone, and It’s a Wonderful Life dominate the holiday season. While I missed The Creator in theaters, I’m excited to watch Edwards’ latest film after appreciating Rogue One: A Star Wars StoryGodzilla, and my personal favorite, Monsters.
