The highly anticipated fifth season of Netflix’s Royal Family historical drama, The Crown, will hit the streaming service on November 9th. The date was revealed during Netflix’s annual Tudum Event, with them showing a quick tease for the series in advance of its imminent trailer release. The timing is pretty good, with renewed interest around the Royal Family following the death of Queen Elizabeth II. Previous seasons of the show have suddenly started showing up on the Netflix Top 10 site as the most popular streaming shows of the week for obvious reasons. While many may find it opportunistic that the series, which is often sharply critical of the Royals, is coming so hot on the heels of the Monarch’s passing, the fact remains that the season has been in production since July 2021. The show always premieres in the late fall.
This season, Imelda Staunton and Jonathan Pryce are taking over as Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, following hot on the heels of Oliva Colman and Tobias Menzies as we follow the characters into the nineties. Much of the season revolves around the infamous divorce of Princess Diana and Prince (now King) Charles. Elizabeth Debicki and Dominic West take over for Emma Corrin and the Emmy-winning Josh O’Connor. Meanwhile, season six of the series is already in production.
