The Exorcist: David Gordon Green sequel has wrapped filming

Filming has wrapped on director David Gordon Green’s sequel to The Exorcist, which could begin a new trilogy of sequels

Back in December, director David Gordon Green’s sequel to the 1973 classic The Exorcist (watch it HERE), which is scheduled to reach theatres on October 13th, had to put filming on hold and begin its holiday break early because lead actor Leslie Odom Jr. (Hamilton) was stricken with an illness. But filming was able to resume after the holidays – and now Deadline has reported that production has officially wrapped.

Deadline’s report also reveals that producer Stephanie Allain (whose credits include Hustle & Flow, Black Snake Moan, and Dear White People) has joined the project as an executive producer. Coming to us from Blumhouse Productions and Morgan Creek Entertainment, the film is being produced by Jason Blum, David Robinson, and James Robinson. Green, Danny McBride, and Couper Samuelson serve as executive producers with Allain. Ryan Turek is overseeing the project for Blumhouse.

Green recently directed a trilogy of sequels in the Halloween franchise, and intends for this Exorcist movie to be the first in another trilogy of sequels that he will direct. He crafted the story for The Exorcist 2023 with Peter Sattler (Broken Diamonds), then wrote the screenplay with Danny McBride (who wrote all three of the new Halloweens with him) and their Halloween Kills co-writer Scott Teems. Story details are being kept under wraps.

Universal and Peacock paid an amount somewhere in the range of $400 million to acquire the rights to distribute this new Exorcist trilogy.

Blum had this to say about Allain joining the production team: “I’ve known Stephanie for years–she’s the coolest and steadiest producer around, and I’m thrilled we’re finally able to work together.

Allain added: “I’m so delighted to join Blumhouse, DGG, Leslie Odom, Jr., and this remarkable cast and crew on a frightening new iteration of one of my favorite films.

This sequel to The Exorcist stars Odom as a character who tracks down Chris MacNeil after his child becomes possessed, with original Exorcist star Ellen Burstyn reprising the role of Chris MacNeil. Also in the cast are Lidya Jewett (Nightbooks), Jennifer Nettles (The Righteous Gemstones), Ann Dowd (The Handmaid’s Tale), Okwui Okpokwasili (Master), and newcomer Olivia Marcum, playing unspecified roles, and Raphael Sbarge (Carnosaur) as a pastor.
