The Garbage Pail Kids are coming back to the big screen

JoBloJoBlo

I almost feel like this is going to turn into a rant about remakes/board game adaptations, but there is news today that Michael Eisner’s production company will be releasing a new Garbage Pail Kids movie. Many of you may not remember that there was a previous film made based on the trading cards that was released back in 1987. Even fewer of you likely remember that it was a musical film. I, for one, will never forget the wretched pile of garbage that it was.

For those of you who have never heard of Garbage Pail Kids, they were a spoof of the Cabbage Patch Kids.  But, where the Cabbage Patch Kids were sweet and wholesome and loving dolls, the Garbage Pail kids were disgusting, vile, and borderline inappropriate trading cards/stickers.  In other words, perfect for pre-teen boys.

THE GARBAGE PAIL KIDS MOVIE was an obvious attempt to cash-in on the franchise name (we never see that happen in Hollywood, now do we?) but it failed miserably.  There has been a recent resurgence in the popularity of the trading cards which likely has led to today’s news.

There is one brightside to this announcement.  Eisner’s Tornante Company has hired visual artist PES to direct the film from a screenplay by newcomer Michael Vukadinovich.

PES has made some very intriguing YouTube videos with stop-motion animation.  His work evokes the short films of Michel Gondry, which is never a bad thing.  Check out his “Western Spaghetti” below.
