Last Updated on July 30, 2021

Steven Spielberg and Richard Donner's THE GOONIES with Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Jeff Cohen, and Corey Feldman turns 35 this year. And today we hear that Fox has ordered a pilot for a TV series which will see a substitute teacher – and three students – attempt to re-enact the Amblin classic.

Sarah Watson (The Bold Type) will pen the script for Warner Bros. TV, SideCar, and Amblin TV. Here's the synopsis:

After failing to make it in New York and carrying a heavy secret with her, Stella Cooper returns to her distressed automotive hometown to substitute teach. She finds inspiration, hope and ultimately salvation when she agrees to help three students who are pursuing their filmmaking dreams by putting on an impossibly ambitious shot-for-shot remake of one of their favorite movies —The Goonies. Over the course of the season of the potential series, their passion will inspire a town in desperate need of hope in this love letter to the power of cinema, storytelling, and dreams.

Greg Mottola (SUPERBAD) will direct the pilot and executive produce with Gail Berman, Lauren Shuler Donner, Richard Donner, Justin Falvey, and Darryl Frank. Are you excited about this series? Let us know below!

In the meantime, THE GOONIES is written by Chris Columbus (GREMLINS) and is an old-fashioned yarn about a band of adventurous kids who take on the might of a property developing company that plans to destroy their home to build a country club. When the children discover an old pirate map in the attic, they follow it into an underground cavern in search of lost treasure but come up against plenty of dangerous obstacles along the way.

It was directed by Richard Donner (THE OMEN) from a screenplay written by Chris Columbus (GREMLINS) based on a story by Steven Spielberg. Donner produced with Harvey Bernhard and the film featured Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Jeff Cohen, Corey Feldman, Kerri Green, Martha Plimpton, and Ke Huy Quan. Warner Bros. released it back on June 7, 1985. You can snag a copy on Blu-ray over on Amazon right over HERE.
