The Mask creator has a comedian in mind for a female-led reboot

The Mask, Jim Carrey, reboot

Adapted from the comic-series of the same name, 1994's THE MASK was a huge success, and, along with ACE VENTURA and DUMB AND DUMBER, helped to make a comedy superstar out of Jim Carrey. Despite that success, a sequel wouldn't materialize until more than ten years later, and I'm sure I don't need to remind you of the cinematic monstrosity which was SON OF THE MASK.

Mike Richardson, one of the creators behind the comic-book character, recently spoke with Forbes about the possibility of the franchise making a return to the big-screen. There's nothing official, but Richardson already has a comedian in mind to take on the title role for what could be a female-led reboot.

I’d like to see a really good physical comedian [in the role]. I have one in mind, but I’m not gonna say her name. We have to do a lot of convincing for this particular actor, but we’ll see … You never know what’s coming in the future. We have some ideas.

Any guesses as to who Richardson could possibly be talking about? Who has the right stuff to fill the shoes of Jim Carrey? "I’d like it to be another character film about a person dealing with absolute power," Richardson said. "The whole theme of The Mask was we all say what we would do if we had absolute power, just like Stanley Ipkiss. When we get absolute power, we often resort to the most petty of endeavors and it’s overcoming our human nature and using the power for good. Stan Lee said, 'with great power comes great responsibility,' but my thing is an older axiom, which is 'absolute power corrupts absolutely.'" Mike Richardson added that one of the great things about THE MASK is that "anybody can get [it], so you can do a story about anyone and you could cast any comedian in the role."
