Screenwriter Kevin Jarre passed away on April 3 in Santa Monica, CA. The unexpected cause of death with heart failure. He was 56. I’m not sure why the news took so long to surface, but it’s a sad story to pass along.

Jarre was born on August 6, 1954 in Detroit before moving to Los Angeles with his mother, Laura Devon, to pursue her acting career. His love of American history inspired him to write the screenplay for GLORY, which earned Denzel Washington his first Oscar.

You may not instantly recognize his name, but you surely are familiar with his output. The celebrated writer also penned such films as THE MUMMY, RAMBO: FIRST BLOOD PART II, TOMBSTONE and THE DEVIL’S OWN.

Jarre is survived by his aunt, who made the announcement of his untimely passing, and his cousins. Our hearts go out to his family and friends. May he rest in peace.
