After unleashing two of this past decade’s most disturbing films with The VVitch and The Lighthouse, Robert Eggers is returning for The Northman. Presented as an epic revenge thriller, Eggers’ The Northman trailer paints a dark and disturbing picture of “how far a Viking prince will go to seek justice for his murdered father.”

The Northman stars Alexander Skarsgård, Anya Taylor-Joy, Nicole Kidman, Ethan Hawke, Willem Dafoe, Björk, Claes Bang, Murray McArthur, Kate Dickie, Ralph Ineson, and Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson. In addition to directing, Robert Eggers also co-wrote the screenplay with Icelandic poet and novelist Sjón.

The plot is based on the Scandanavian legend that inspired Hamlet. The film stars Alexander Skarsgård as a Viking prince. His father, played by Ethan Hawke, is murdered by Claes Bang’s usurper to the throne, leading to exile for the prince and estrangement from his queen mother, played by Nicole Kidman. The prince then goes on a bloody rampage, with Anya Taylor-Joy playing his love interest. The Robert Eggers Viking thriller also stars Willem Dafoe, and my favorite musical artist of all time, Björk. Eggers co-wrote the screenplay with Icelandic poet and novelist Sjón. Lars Knudsen, Mark Huffman, and New Regency produce.

I don’t know about you but The Northman trailer has me hyped! The footage makes this movie look tragic and beautiful all at once, even if a majority of its characters are covered in the blood of their enemies as well as their own filth. Also, can we please take a moment to appreciate the build on Skarsgård for this film? I would not want to be on the other end of his ax, and I certainly would not want to be the one keeping his mother captive. The Northman looks like another great film to look forward to in the new year. Let’s go to war!

In addition to today’s trailer, images, and poster, we had the chance to speak with Eggers about The Northman. During our time with the enigmatic filmmaker, we talk about everything from casting the new film to arranging its engrossing soundtrack. Click here to check it out.

The Northman will seek its revenge in theaters on April 22, 2022.
