The Substance: Ray Liotta joins Demi Moore, Margaret Qualley in body horror film

Two weeks ago, it was announced that Demi Moore (Ghost) and Margaret Qualley (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood) will be starring in director Coralie Fargeat‘s new film The Substance. Now Deadline reports that Moore and Qualley will be joined in the cast by Ray Liotta, who is fresh off delivering a dual performance in The Sopranos prequel The Many Saints of Newark.

Details on the character Liotta will be playing in The Substance have not been revealed… in fact, aside from the names of the actors, not much has been revealed about this project at all. All we really know about it at this point is that it’s described as being an

explosive feminist take on body horror.

The Substance is set up at Universal Pictures and Working Title Films. Fargeat is producing the film with Working Title partners Eric Fellner and Tim Bevan. Alexandra Loewy and Nicolas Royer serve as executive producers, while Universal Pictures Senior Executive VP Production Development Erik Baiers will be overseeing the project for the studio.

This will be the second feature film from Fargeat. Her feature directorial debut was the very cool revenge movie that was appropriately titled Revenge. You can read our 8/10 review of the film at THIS LINK.

Liotta has racked up over 120 film and TV credits over the last 42 years. Among those credits are roles in Something Wild, Field of Dreams, Goodfellas, Unlawful Entry, No Escape, Unforgettable, Turbulence, Cop Land, Hannibal, Blow, Narc, Identity, Smokin’ Aces, Observe and Report, Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, Marriage Story, Hubie Halloween, and Hanna.

Fargeat is definitely assembling a strong cast for her body horror movie, which has a title that makes me think of the The Stuff. What is “The Substance”? We’ll have to keep waiting to find out.
