The Super Mario Bros. Movie website goes meta, teases plot details

The Super Mario Bros. are open for business, ready to unclog your pipes and potentially tease a supporting character in the movie.

It’s-a them, Mario and Luigi! The plumber brothers have launched a new website to promote their business, Super Mario Bros. Plumbing. Oh, and probably the upcoming The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

An ad, which premiered during Sunday’s Super Bowl and offered a terrific sendup of the beloved The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!, provided a phone number and link for the “company”’s official website.

The website itself has this message from the Italian plumbers: “Welcome to Super Mario Bros. Plumbing! We are brothers and yes, we are super. My little (but taller) brother, Luigi, and I were tired of dealing with spiky bosses, so we jumped at the opportunity to take on Brooklyn’s plumbing problems all by ourselves. Family-owned and operated, we aim to one-up the competition with our expert white-glove service. Thanks for checking us out!”

If you’re actually looking to use Mario and Luigi to unclog your pipes, be aware that their reviews don’t exactly offer objective takes on their work. A five-star one from user BrosMom reads, “The Mario Bros. are the very best in the business! They’re polite, professional, adorable, and treated me like family!” On the other side, SpikeIsCool wrote, “There’s no loyalty w/ mario and luigi!!! The SUBPAR Mario Bros used to wrk for me until they decided to break off and start there own bussines…. theyll learn their lesson someday…” This is a reference to Foreman Spike (voiced by Sebastian Maniscalco), a character introduced in the 1985 video game Wrecking Crew, showing another layer of devotion the filmmakers behind The Super Mario Bros. Movie have to the nostalgia element. Spike—who hasn’t been seen in any promotional materials—could factor into early parts of the movie.

And if you text the provided business phone number (929-55-MARIO), you’ll get the following: “Thanks for your interest in Super Mario Bros. Plumbing! We’re a family-owned and operated business, providing white glove plumbing services to Brooklyn and Queens. Please click the link to sign up to get exclusive updates, service offerings and more.” Yeah yeah yeah, now where’s Wave 4 of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe? And if you call that same number, you get a delightful message from Luigi himself—well, Charlie Day’s Luigi.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie has teased other minor characters through non-trailer campaigns as well, as they did with Lumalee, featured in the toy line.

What do you think of The Super Mario Bros. Movie marketing campaign? Will you catch the movie on opening weekend? Let us know!
