The Walking Dead is coming to an end… which is a big deal, since the show was a pop culture sensation and drew up to seventeen million viewers at one time. These days, it’s down to less than two million viewers per episode, but it’s still the most-watched scripted show on AMC. The series ending just doesn’t seem like such a big deal because it has already been confirmed that popular characters are getting their own spin-offs – Carol and Daryl are getting their own show, the story of Maggie and Negan will continue on Isle of the Dead – plus there’s Fear the Walking Dead and the upcoming anthology series Tales of the Walking Dead. But the main show will be over at the end of its eleventh season, and the folks at ComicBook.com have been able to confirm that the series finale is going to be directed by Greg Nicotero.

It’s not surprising to hear that Nicotero will be directing the finale, in fact it’s the most fitting choice. (Considering that getting Frank Darabont back to direct the finale is definitely not an option.) Nicotero, who is an executive producer on the show and also heads up the FX department, has been directing premieres and finales for several seasons now. For example, Nicotero has also directed the last midseason finale of the show’s run.

That last midseason finale is called God, and it will be available to watch on AMC+ as of April 3rd. It will air on AMC April 10th. Here’s the synopsis:

In the very last mid-season finale for The Walking Dead, our heroes are trapped in situations beyond their control. Everyone they’ve worked so hard to protect is at risk as danger baits them at every turn. All is at stake. Now, they must decide who and what are worth saving. Each decision comes with its own deadly ramifications.

The Walking Dead season 11 has been split into three batches of eight episodes. The final eight episodes will air sometime later this year. The series finale is expected to air before the end of 2022.
