Tomb Raider: Hayley Atwell to voice Lara Croft for new anime series

Hayley Atwell will voice Lara Croft in Netflix's Tomb Raider anime series

Grab your dual handguns, a spot of tea, and kiss your ancient pottery goodbye because Lara Croft is getting her own anime series courtesy of Netflix. Voicing the iconic Tomb Raider character for the series is Marvel alumna Hayley Atwell. Based on the Square Enix action-adventure video game franchise, the anime takes place after the events of the video game reboot trilogy.

Tomb Raider will be written by Tasha Huo (The Witcher: Blood Origin, Red Sonja), who is executive producing with dj2 Entertainment founder and CEO Dmitri M. Johnson (Sonic the Hedgehog), Stephan Bugaj, and Howard Bliss. In addition, Jacob Robinson is executive producing through Tractor Pants.

In Tomb Raider film news, Alicia Vikander recently confirmed that Tomb Raider 2 is still in the works. The sequel was originally slated to be helmed by Ben Wheatley (Rebecca), but when production was delayed due to COVID-19, Wheatley departed and Lovecraft Country‘s Misha Green came on board to write and direct Tomb Raider 2.

While speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Alicia Vikander confirmed that Tomb Raider 2 is still in the works. “I hope we go and make another movie,” Vikander said. “Because of the pandemic, we had plans of shooting this film, and now it’s been one and a half years, but Misha Green is on board, and she’s writing a draft right now.” The actress added that she felt an instant connection with Green.

Atwell, who I feel is an exceptional choice for the role of Lara Croft, recently completed work of Mission: Impossible 7. Plot details for the film are scarce at this time, though we do know the movie boasts a killer cast. In addition to Atwell and Tom Cruise, of course, the film also stars Rebecca Ferguson, Vanessa Kirby, Pam Klementieff, Simon Pegg, She Whigham, Cary Elwes, Indira Varma, Ving Rhames, Rob Delaney, Esai Morales, and Henry Czerny.

Be sure to catch Atwell as Captain Carter in the first episode of Marvel Studios’ What If?… Select episodes of the anthology series are streaming now on Disney+.
