What makes some of the most memorable characters in film history so iconic is that they don’t overstay their welcome. They come in, do their little bit, steal the show away from the leading characters, and then evaporate from the screen and into film legend. In fact, many of the characters we most associate with classic films are actually barely in those films. Take Hannibal Lecter, for instance, who was only in SILENCE OF THE LAMBS for 16 minutes and yet, thanks to an Oscar-winning performance from Anthony Hopkins, managed to become one of the most haunting and recognizable film villains of all time. Same goes for Darth Vader (voiced by James Earl Jones), who was only in A NEW HOPE for 12 minutes. I guess it’s true what they say: The best guests always leave the party early.
