Top Gun 2 enlists Jungle Book writer Justin Marks

We haven’t heard a lot over the last year about the sequel to TOP GUN; producer Jerry Bruckheimer, who is returning for the sequel, shared his basic plot idea involving drones, but that’s pretty much it. After the passing of Tony Scott, the project was at a standstill. Today THR is reporting that the sequel to the 80s movie has landed a writer; Justin Marks has signed on to pen the script. He’s been working on Jon Favreau’s upcoming JUNGLE BOOK adaptation, and previously turned in a script for the forgettable STREET FIGHTER: THE LEGEND OF CHUN-LI.

So with a writer in place it looks like this movie is taking off again; but will Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer return? I know Cruise has kept in shape and is crazy busy these days, I can’t say much about Kilmer’s whereabouts. The 1986 movie made over $350 million worldwide on a $15 million budget; why it took them this long to get a sequel together is beyond me. I also think this movie doesn’t stand a chance without Cruise; can you image the awesome posters with the return of Maverick on them? Ticket bought!

Marks seems to be getting into the spirit appropriately:

I’m glad I found this clip, Tom Cruise is always great on late-night talk shows and here he reveals how he is to blame for actors having to travel the world to pimp their movies; this guy is awesome.
