Trailer: Eli Roth and DreamWorks team for Fright Krewe animated series

Eli Roth is looking to make 2023 a prolific year for horror, at least on his terms. In addition to the release of Thanksgiving – which we’ve been waiting to see for more than 15 years now –he is also behind the upcoming animated series Fright Krewe. Now, we have a trailer for that DreamWorks production.

While there is blood, voodoo, the undead, and more in the trailer, that Fright Krewe is an animated series and comes from the company that brought us Shrek and that little boy fishing from the moon shows that Eli Roth is ready to broaden his horror horizons. And whether you like his movies or not, Roth is one of the foremost historians of the genre and does objectively deserve respect in that regard. But can he handle animation?

Developed by Roth and author James Frey (“A Million Little Pieces”), Fright Krewe has the following synopsis: “An ancient prophecy and a Voodoo Queen put misfit teens in charge of saving New Orleans from the biggest demonic threat it’s faced in almost two centuries. But, honestly? Saving the world might be easier than becoming friends.” The 10-episode series premieres on Hulu and Peacock on October 2nd.

Seeing Eli Roth’s name attached to an animated series is a bit jarring – after all, this is the guy that helped put “torture porn” back in theaters – but the trailer actually looks pretty fun. On top of that, it’s great to see some animated horror hitting the small screen seeing how rare that is. Sure, Fright Krewe is aimed at “older kids” (whatever that means) but this could be a step forward for the genre in terms of demographics.

The Fright Krewe voice cast includes Sydney Mikayla, Tim Johnson Jr., Grace Lu, Chester Rushing, Terrence Little Gardenhigh, and Jacques Colimon.

The trailer for Thanksgiving arrived just last week, so Eli Roth is truly gearing up for spooky season and beyond. That movie, which started as a fake trailer in 2007’s Grindhouse, will bypass Halloween and instead hit theaters the week before, well, Thanksgiving.
