Trailer for Train to Busan sequel Peninsula dials up the zombie action

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

A new trailer for PENINSULA, director Yeon Sang-ho's follow-up to TRAIN TO BUSAN, has been released which gives us an ample helping of zombie-style action that couldn't be more different from the first film. TRAIN TO BUSAN largely took place on a train to Busan as a zombie apocalypse broke out in the country, threatening the safety of the passengers. The South Korean film was a wild ride, and surprisingly emotional, as well as a critical and commercial success. PENINSULA follows a Jung-seok, a former soldier who has managed to escape overseas but is given a mission to return to the devastated Korean peninsula and unexpectedly meets up with survivors.

Although PENINSULA takes place in the same universe as TRAIN TO BUSAN, Yeon Sang-ho has previously said that he didn't think it'd be right to call the film an official sequel as it doesn't continue the story of the first film and features different characters. As we can see, the film is also much bigger than its predecessor. "The scale of Peninsula can’t compare to Train To Busan, it makes it look like an independent film," Yeon Sang-ho said. "Train To Busan was a high-concept film shot in narrow spaces whereas Peninsula has a much wider scope of movement."

The official synopsis for PENINSULA:

Four years after South Korea’s total decimation in TRAIN TO BUSAN, the zombie thriller that captivated audiences worldwide, acclaimed director Yeon Sang-ho brings us PENINSULA, the next nail-biting chapter in his post-apocalyptic world. Jung-seok, a soldier who previously escaped the diseased wasteland, relives the horror when assigned to a covert operation with two simple objectives: retrieve and survive. When his team unexpectedly stumbles upon survivors, their lives will depend on whether the best—or worst—of human nature prevails in the direst of circumstances.

PENINSULA is expected to hit theaters in South Korea in July, but that all depends on what COVID-19 has to say.
