One of the greatest memories of a movie geek’s youth: seeing STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN, then sneaking into the theater next door for a showing of TRON.
Needless to say, I’m excited about a TRON sequel — at least in theory. The original took place in the early days of videogame culture, and featured then-groundbreaking special FX and concepts. How will it translate to a 21st century audience who could recreate the movie with the processing power in their iPhone?
All I know is that Disney and the filmmakers are heading down the right bitstream — Jeff Bridges is back as hotshot programmer Flynn, and the movie has some remarkable non-CGI eye-candy in Beau Garrett and Olivia Wilde.
And now Coming Soon hears that Bruce Boxleitner will also be back, presumably as both Flynn’s friend Alan and his digital alter-ego, the security program of the title. Boxleitner has kept busy all these years (recently with “BABYLON 5” and lots of Sci-Fi Channel movies, and I just saw him as Awesome’s dad on “CHUCK”), but TRON is probably the one he’s known for. Unless you’re a big fan of “SCARECROW & MRS. KING” or the INDIANA JONES ripoff “BRING ‘EM BACK ALIVE.”
