True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto oversaw the first three seasons of the HBO series, but the upcoming fourth season – which is called True Detective: Night Country – comes from the mind of Tigers Are Not Afraid writer/director Issa López. HBO hasn’t announced a premiere date for the season yet, but they have unveiled an image from True Detective: Night Country, and you can check it out at the bottom of this article. The image shows the lead characters, played by Jodie Foster (The Silence of the Lambs) and professional boxer Kali Reis.

True Detective: Night Country picks up after the long winter night falls in Ennis, Alaska, as the six men that operate the Tsalal Arctic Research Station vanish without a trace. To solve the case, Detectives Liz Danvers (Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Reis) will have to confront the darkness they carry in themselves, and dig into the haunted truths that lie buried under the eternal ice.

Foster and Reis are joined in the cast by John Hawkes (Deadwood), Christopher Eccleston (Doctor Who), Fiona Shaw (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1), Finn Bennett (The Nevers), Anna Lambe (The Grizzlies), newcomer Aka Niviâna, Isabella Star Lablanc (Long Slow Exhale), and Joel D. Montgrand (Average Dicks). Hawkes plays Hank Prior, “a police officer with old grudges hiding under a quiet surface.” Eccleston is Ted Corsaro, “the regional Chief of Police and a political animal with a long history tying him to Liz Danvers (Foster).” Shaw’s character is Rose Aguineau, “a survivalist with a past full of secrets.” Bennett plays Peter Prior, “Liz Danvers’ protégé and apprentice.” Lambe is Kayla Malee, “a young nurse with little patience for anybody that messes with her family.” Niviâna plays Julia, “Navarro’s sister, a woman battling demons both in her history and in her mind.” Lablanc is Leah, “Danvers’ stepdaughter, a young woman fighting for her voice and her identity.” Montgrand plays Eddie Qavvik, “Navarro’s love interest. He’s a local musher with connections that run deep in Ennis.”

López wrote and directed True Detective: Night Country, served as the showrunner, and executive produced alongside Pizzolatto, Foster, Barry Jenkins, Adele Romanski, Mark Ceryak, Mari Jo Winkler, Chris Mundy, Alan Page Arriaga, Steve Golin, Richard Brown, Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson, and Cary Joji Fukunaga. The producers include Princess Daazhraii Johnson, Cathy Tagnak Rexford, and Sam Breckman.

I loved the first season of True Detective, but still haven’t gotten around to watch the second or third seasons. I need to do that one of these days, and I’m very interested in checking out True Detective: Night Country.
