Hailee Steinfeld has justifiably been called the best part of TRUE GRIT this side of Jeff Bridges’ badassery, and after taking her talents to the currently filming adaptation of ENDER’S GAME as well as another version of ROMEO AND JULIET she has moved on to a third adaptation entitled WHY WE BROKE UP.
Written by Daniel Handler, aka Lemony Snicket, the book was published towards the end of 2011 and deals with the story of “Min, a high school sophomore and cinephile who enjoys hanging out with friends at her favorite coffee shop. She falls hard for Ed, a senior and captain of the basketball team, and gets caught up in their whirlwind romance. The film unfolds a couple of weeks after the break-up, when she dumps a letter and box of seemingly meaningless mementos on his porch.” Handler himself handled the adaptation, and Beth McCarthy-Miller (“30 Rock,” “SNL”) is on board to direct.
A different plot synopsis: Min Green and Ed Slaterton are breaking up, so Min is writing Ed a letter and giving him a box. Inside the box is why they broke up. Two bottle caps, a movie ticket, a folded note, a box of matches, a protractor, books, a toy truck, a pair of ugly earrings, a comb from a motel room, and every other item collected over the course of a giddy, intimate, heartbreaking relationship. Item after item is illustrated and accounted for, and then the box, like a girlfriend, will be dumped.
