Word around Gotham is that Viola Davis, the multi-award winning actress who played the tough-as-nails warden of the Suicide Squad, Amanda Waller, will return for the sequel. News of Davis making her way back to the franchise comes to us courtesy of The Wrap, who in an exclusive report stated that an individual close to the project says that she's on board. For the moment, I think we should all take this report with a grain of salt, at least until we hear something more official.

For quite some time, the studio had director Gavin O’Connor (THE ACCOUNTANT, PRIDE AND GLORY) attached to the follow up of David Ayer's 2016 villain-centric action adventure fantasy, though it appears as if O'Connor is now fully invested in bringing the Brad Ingelsby-scripted drama TORRANCE starring Ben Affleck to the big screen. Back in January, it was announced that GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY filmmaker James Gunn was in talks to write and possibly direct THE SUICIDE SQUAD, an opportunity that came to the SLITHER helmer shortly after Disney fired him from the GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY 3 project. Since that time, Disney has re-hired Gunn for the third chapter of their "a-holes in space" saga, Making Gunn the savory meat in a Marvel/DC sandwich.

In the past, Waller has been described as “a former congressional aide and government agent who is often placed in charge of the Suicide Squad, a semi-secret government-run group of former super villains working in return for amnesty.” However, while that's all fine and dandy, fans of the character will know that she's also a manipulative monster who is willing to sacrifice just about anyone or anything to get the job done. In my opinion, she's the real villain of the Suicide Squad.

Last week, Captain Boomerang actor Jai Courtney said that he'll be coming back for THE SUICIDE SQUAD as well, though again, we're still waiting for the official word from the powers that be.

James Gunn's THE SUICIDE SQUAD is expected to hit theaters hit theaters on Aug. 6, 2021, with Peter Safran and Charles Roven producing.
