Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi are finally writing the We’re Wolves script

More than ten years have gone by since Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi, writers/directors of the 2014 mockumentary horror comedy film What We Do in the Shadows, let the world know that they were planning to make a spin-off film called We’re Wolves. There was even a time when Waititi thought We’re Wolves would be his next film after his 2017 contribution to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Thor: Ragnarok. Then his schedule got busier than anticipated – and there was also the problem that he and Clement never wrote the script for We’re Wolves. They still haven’t completed it, but the good news is that they’re finally working on it.

What is What We Do in the Shadows about?

What We Do in the Shadows follows the mundane, everyday lives of four centuries-old vampire roommates living in a flat in Wellington, New Zealand. Despite their supernatural powers, they struggle with routine human problems like paying rent, doing chores, and resolving flatmate conflicts.

The film includes a scene where the vampires cross paths with a group of “werewolves, not swear-wolves,” and those werewolves will be the focus of We’re Wolves. Waititi previously said the spin-off revolve around “a power battle between lycanthropes” played by returning actors Rhys Darby and Stuart Rutherford.”It would basically be Rhys and Stu vying for position as the alpha male in the werewolf gang.

What’s the latest news on We’re Wolves?

Clement told Collider that he and Waititi have finally started working on the script. “We’re writing it, actually. We started writing. For a long time, we were just talking about it. Now, we’ve started it. Very recently. When we get together, we do some work on it.

However, they haven’t figured out just how much script the movie should have, since What We Do in the Shadows had a storyline in place, but the dialogue was 100% improvised. “Now we have to decide, ‘Are we going to script this one or are we going to do improv like the first one, or scripted like the show?’ It’s quite good to have the control of the shot. It’s really fun just making it up on the fly.

Either way, he’s hoping they’ll be finished with the We’re Wolves script sometime in 2027.

Other Spin-offs

While we’ve been waiting for We’re Wolves, other spin-offs from What We Do in the Shadows have made their way out into the world. A TV series called Wellington Paranormal, which followed a pair of police officers from the movie, ran for 4 seasons (a total of 25 episodes) on TVNZ 2.

There was also a What We Do in the Shadows TV series that followed a group of vampires living on Staten Island. That show – which Clement notes was scripted “with occasional improv” – ran for 6 seasons (a total of 61 episodes) on FX.
