Viggo Mortensen being BAMF in a creme suitWe recently shared with you some news about GET OUT OF THE FURNACE, the packed-with-grit-revenge-flick collaboration of director Scott Cooper (GET OUT OF THE FURNACE) and Christian Bale. We shared it with you because it sounds awesome in just about every way that a movie can be awesome while still being a real.  Well, it somehow gets better with this rumor of Cooper’s hopeful casting.

In fact the only way this could get better is for this rumor to come true, the rumor in question being that Viggo Mortensen is the man Cooper wants to play the Christian Bale’s antagonist.  Mortensen is notoriously picky about his projects as there’s so much else he does beyond movies, not to mention the fact that making movies with the kind of ferocity Mortensen brings is no doubt exhausting, so we’ll see and surely let you know.

The report also says that Casey Affleck, Garrett Hedlund, Taylor Kitsch and Channing Tatum are all circling the part of Bale’s brother (whose death inspires Bale’s subsequent violent revenge quest).  No formal deals have been made at this point beyond Cooper’s direction.

And in an interesting bit of connective tissue, here’s Maggie Gyllenhaal (she worked with Cooper in CRAZY HEART and Bale in THE DARK KNIGHT):
