After Earth

I don't think anyone really knows what to expect from AFTER EARTH, the latest from director M. Night Shyamalan. There are a bunch of  science-fiction films out this summer and into the fall (most recently Tom Cruise's OBLIVION) and I'm not sure if AFTER EARTH will be able to hold it's own against films like ELYSIUM and GRAVITY.

The first clip for AFTER EARTH has been released starring Will Smith and his son Jaden Smith. The scene looks like it takes place soon after their ship has crashed on to Earth and the elder Smith is explaining to his son how he must find a homing beacon or both of them will die.

Synopsis:

One thousand years after cataclysmic events forced humanity's escape from Earth, Nova Prime has become mankind's new home. Legendary General Cypher Raige (played by Will Smith) returns from an extended tour of duty to his estranged family, ready to be a father to his 13-year-old son, Kitai (played by Jaden Smith). When an asteroid storm damages Cypher and Kitai's craft, they crash-land on a now unfamiliar and dangerous Earth. As his father lies dying in the cockpit, Kitai must trek across the hostile terrain to recover their rescue beacon. His whole life, Kitai has wanted nothing more than to be a soldier like his father. Today, he gets his chance.

I'm not sold on AFTER EARTH at all but I am at least willing to give it a shot, even if there are a lot of red flags for this movie in my opinion. We'll be able to see if AFTER EARTH is the next big thing or a complete misfire when it hits theaters on May 31st, 2013.
