Writer Jay Basu tapped for Universal’s classic monsters relaunch

To be honest, I lost a lot of interest in Universal's classic monsters relaunch when we learned that the films would be taken out of the horror genre. Who could blame me? These are the monster films we either grew up loving or inspired the films that we consider our favorites. To hear that Universal wants to take these iconic characters into a more action-oriented direction is just a shitty move.

We've known for a while that Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan were among the architects of the new Universal monsters universe, and now Deadline is reporting that MONSTERS: DARK CONTINENT writer Jay Basu has been tapped by Uni to join its efforts to relaunch its library of classic monster movies.

Basu has been an increasingly sought-after writer, according to Deadline. His action adventure THE PIER, which he co-wrote with David Bowers, was recently voted runner up in the annual Brit List of best un-produced screenplays. Basu also co-penned Vertigo Films’ sequel MONSTERS: DARK CONTINENT with writer-director Tom Green, which is currently in post-production.

Here's hoping Basu can add some much needed horror to these action-oriented relaunches of the classic Universal monsters. I mean, come on…they're monsters, after all! Horror fans want to see these characters return to their horror roots!
